Since partial legalisation in 2024, growing your own cannabis has been legal in Germany – and thousands of hobby growers have since set about raising their first plants. But what do you need to know before you start? This guide explains everything: from the legal situation and the right equipment to your first harvest.
What is legal? The rules at a glance
The Cannabis Act (CanG) allows adults aged 18 and over to grow up to 3 plants at the same time privately. The harvest may only be used for personal consumption – passing it on or selling it remains prohibited. Seeds can be bought and owned in unlimited quantities. Important: the plants must not be publicly visible, and access by minors must be ruled out at all times.
Indoor or outdoor – which is better for beginners?
The first big decision when growing at home: inside or outside? Outdoor growing is cheaper and more natural – the sun provides the light for free. However, you are tied to the seasons and have less control over climate and pests. Indoor growing gives you full control over light, temperature and humidity. The result is often of higher quality, but the start-up costs are higher.
The right equipment to get started
If you grow indoors, you will need a grow tent (80×80 cm is enough for beginners), good lighting, a fan and an exhaust filter. Modern LED lamps are energy-efficient and produce little heat – ideal for home use. An all-in-one starter kit contains all the necessary components and makes getting started considerably easier.
Choosing the right strain
For beginners, robust strains that are easy to grow are recommended. Autoflowering strains flower regardless of the light cycle and are ideal for an uncomplicated start. They grow faster (8–10 weeks) and stay compact. Feminised seeds guarantee female plants, which produce the coveted buds.
