If you travel regularly and want to take your grinder with you, sooner or later you'll ask yourself the same questions: Can it even go in your hand luggage? Will it make you look suspicious during a police check? And what applies if you fly abroad with it? Solid answers are hard to come by – so we've gathered the most important facts for you.
Is a grinder actually legal?
The short answer first: yes. A grinder is a perfectly ordinary consumption accessory and does not fall under the German Narcotics Act (Betäubungsmittelgesetz). It's usually made of metal or plastic and doesn't itself contain any prohibited substances – owning one is permitted in Germany regardless of the Cannabis Act, just like buying one in a head shop or online. We explain in detail how a grinder is built and what to look out for when buying one in our basic guide What is a grinder.
Residue in the grinder is a special case, however. Cannabis residue, skuff or leftover kief is still legally considered a narcotic – even if it's only traces. In practice, possession of minor residue on accessories such as grinders, pipes or bongs is usually not prosecuted, because the amount isn't enough to consume. But you shouldn't rely on that: whether a report really has no consequences is ultimately decided by the responsible public prosecutor on a case-by-case basis – and until then, a check can be unpleasant and time-consuming.
Grinder in your hand luggage: the rules at the airport
An empty, clean grinder is generally no problem at the airport. Neither the German Federal Police nor EU security regulations list grinders as prohibited items in hand luggage – unlike knives or tools with long blades, for example. Since a grinder is usually made of metal, it may stand out on the X-ray or at the metal detector and will then be checked additionally by hand or with a swab test.
It's precisely this swab test that's the real sticking point: it was originally developed to detect traces of explosives, but depending on the device it also reacts to other substance residues. A grinder with visible kief or resin residue therefore increases the risk of questions or a more thorough bag search – regardless of whether anything comes of it in the end. A thoroughly cleaned model spares you this stress from the outset.
